Ivan Pavlov was a Russian scientist most famous for a series of experiments that found that dogs can be trained to respond a certain way to stimulation. Pavlov trained the dogs to salivate when they heard a bell because during training, the bell was always accompanied by food.
Pavlov's followers furthered his research and showed certain behaviors can become so conditioned they occur only when the stimulation occurs. In other words, the dogs could be trained to salivate only at the sound of a bell.
Pavlov received considerable acclaim for his work, including a 1901 appointment to the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology.
As Pavlov's work became known in the West, the idea of "conditioning" caught on and it is now widely held that conditioning forms the basis of much of learned human behavior.
Nowadays, the concept of conditioning has been co-opted by industries such as commercial advertising. An effective "conditioning" commercial will be able to manipulate the response to a stimulus (like seeing a product's name) which initially does not provoke any feeling. The objective is to train people to make the "false" connection between positive emotions (e.g. happiness or feeling attractive) and the particular brand of consumer goods being advertised.
